Food for the child

First 4 months of life
Only mother’s milk. No water – even on a very hot day. Frequent urination (6 times or more in 24 hours) in an exclusively breastfed baby indicates that the baby is getting enough nutrition as well as water from the mother.

From 5th month onwards
Breast feeding to continue. Start boiled and cooled water with a small glass. No need for use of bottle at any age.
Add following food as advised:

Mashed Banana: A quarter ripe banana to begin with. Increase by a quarter every succeeding week to the limit accepted. You may interchange banana with apple (cut peeled apple into small bits; boil it; mash in a mixer or with spoon). Other seasonal fruits like pears (boiled), papaya, mango, chikoo, etc. may also be given.

Porridge : may be added a month after starting fruits. Home-made suji kheer (rava kheer), thin seera, with ghee, dalia from broken wheat, ragi (nachni), soaked bread in milk, mashed boiled rice, or phirni made from rice powder and milk, should be preferred to readymade cereals. A ready- to-use porridge base can be prepared in the following manner: roast, grind and mix equal parts of rice, wheat, nachni (ragi) and moong dal. Store the mixed powder can be used for making thin kheer with milk and sugar, or thin seera with ghee and sugar (or salt). The quantity of salt or sugar used should be very little. Give one or two teaspoons twice a day, after a breast feed in morning and evening. Keep increasing every 3rd or 4th day the amount accepted. Later on, you may also add such soft food between two breastfeeds.

Soft Boiled Egg : (For those who eat eggs) Add a week later. Boil the egg in a water for three minutes and then cool in running water. Commence with one teaspoon of the yellow portion. Generally increase by teaspoon increments adding the white of egg so that baby may eat the whole egg in about 4 weeks from commencement.

Mashed & well-cooked Vegetables : Add a week later. Prepare with ghee or butter or cooking oil. Begin with 2 to 4 teaspoons and increase progressively. Dark green leafy vegetables, carrots and pumpkin are preferable.

Mashed and well-cooked Khichri or Rice and Dal : Add 1-2 weeks later. Prepare with ghee or cooking oil or butter. Begin with 2 to 4 teaspoons and increase to quantity accepted by the baby. The above suggestions are made to foster more tastes and to increase the quantity of the amount accepted. Patience and perseverance are the key words. In case you have started giving solids to a bigger baby, you may begin with a larger amount and increase rapidly. Gradually let the child have other foods like chapati soaked in dal, cooked bone marrow, minced meat, etc.

Note:

1. In families with a history of allergy (asthma, eczema), avoid artificial milk, egg, cocoa preparations (like chocolate), juices and wheat preparations until the completion of 6 months. With a strong family history of allergy, it may even be better to avoid all foods other than breast milk in the first 6 months of life.
2. Vegetarians should note that non-vegetarian food is not essential.
3. Ready-made cereals like Farex, Cerelac and Nestum are not recommended.

Diet after one year
Mother’s milk should be continued in the second year. Cow or buffalo milk, though not essential, can be given from a glass (2-3 times). Gradually, let the child get used to adult food made at home. In Children disease who do not eat enough at a time should be offered food and fruits every 2-3 hours, but not by force. Healthy foods like fruits, raw vegetables, sprouts and salt should be kept to minimum. Encourage the child to eat by herself even if she makes mess. You may help but do not force.

Food for older children
Make sure that enough high-protein foods are taken like pulses, beans, dry fruits, milk and milk products, meat, chicken, eggs and fish. Sprouted gram or moong is very nutritious. Those who do not like milk may take milk preparations like curd or paneer. Fish is preferable to other non-vegetarian foods. Green, orange, red and yellow vegetables are essential. Seasonal fruits should be taken in abundance. Chapati should be made from whole-wheat flour. (Do not throw away the bran.) Polished rice is not as healthy as unpolished or par-boiled rice. Scrape vegetables like potatoes, instead of peeling them. Water in which rice or vegetables have been boiled should be utilised. Do not overcook the vegetables. Avoid too many spices. Avoid chocolates, sweets, cold drinks, drinks made from concentrates, flavouring agents, tea, coffee, etc. as far as possible. Use less of sugar, salt and refined flour (maida) preparations like rich biscuits, cake, pastry, noodles, etc.

During Pregnancy & Breast-feeding for children
Mother should eat about a quarter more than her normal diet. Fruits, dark green and other leafy vegetables, raw vegetables, ragi (nachni), dal and milk or milk preparations are recommended. Too much milk is not desirable. Non-vegetarians should also take leafy and raw vegetables. Iron and folic acid tablets should be taken. If there is a past or family history of allergy, milk, egg, fish, peanuts and citrus fruits should be taken after consulting the physician.
